Talent
Well, it would be a pretty dumb competition
without allowing our fans to have major input. Strong, positive
audience reaction to your performance is essential to be considered for
Comic of the Year - cricket farmers need not apply. When your
audience is doubled over in laughter for the better part of your
performance - you're on the right track. Our club managers have
reported this year, more than ever, how great the talent level has been
this year. The staff listens to audience comments, they report the
talent points every single week.

Personality / Character Off Stage
This may come as a surprise to some readers (I
know Hysterical competitors subscribe to this newsletter - it's like a
prospecting list for them!), but while Hysterical venues certainly enjoy
their work more with the great talent we bring to them, they are in
business. Their business involves making their clients feel welcome,
making sure they enjoy themselves well enough to return again and again -
to bring their friends. They insist that their staff is courteous, fun and
friendly. Our comics arrive with celebrity status and are treated
well. They take the stage and "set the place on fire" with
laughter. Talent that can achieve Comic of the Year status, make an
effort to become a part of the team to make the experience the best it can
be for the audience, staff and management. They are friendly with
the staff (not amorous with the wait staff). A Comic of the Year
will often be found near the exit after a show, shaking hands, thanking
people for coming, inviting them back again, making everyone there feel
like it was all for them. A Comic of the Year spends time with the
management. Not to the point of being an imposition, but enough to
let the management know you are there to support his/her business and as a
professional ambassador of Hysterical Management. I've heard
nightmare stories about "comedians" working for other agencies
that stay in their room to the last possible moment, often arriving late
or only moments before show time and slither off to the Green Room
whenever they're not on stage. |
Professionalism With Your Agent
I was a comic for more than ten years before
breathing life into Hysterical Management. I've remained on stage
because I love it and it provides an opportunity for some face to face
time with Hysterical accounts, the comics and of course the fans. My
point is that I know what it is to be a road comic - I'm one of you!
I've dealt with some of the slugs that book entertainment.
Through all those years, I'd strive to always
be professional, prompt, honest with the agents. Too often I was
disappointed with the treatment I got in return. That's when I
decided to bring the professionalism to the booking side of the
business. Other agents have scoffed at me, telling me I'm naive,
that I'll become hard and bitter (like they are I suppose), before
long.
I am delighted to report how wrong they
were. I've found that being a straight shooter pays enormous
dividends. Hysterical Management boasts of some of the finest venues in
the industry! We brag about having the funniest entertainers in the
world! The people I work with are wonderful business partners and
good and loyal friends.
Talent that is Comic of the Year caliber
understands and appreciates all of that. Not just up here in the
mind, but more importantly here, in the heart. To be considered for
Comic of the Year, you need to be consistently attentive to the few things
your agent needs from you. There's no big secret here. Is your
promo up to date? Is there enough in your folder? Do you send
the commissions you collect in a timely manner? Do you arrive at the
club on time? Do you deal with conflict in a professional
manner? In short, are you dealing with your agent with the same
level of professionalism that you want from them?
If
you answer yes to all of these you are in the running for Comic of the
Year! |
